### Teaching My Kids to Code

Here is my experience in teaching Kids how to Code.

Little known fact is that I taught at CDAC from 2000–2012 and I discovered my passion for teaching. My grandparents had a school and my mom was a professor so this came naturally to me.

For the past 2 summers I have taught the kids of my classmates from Stanford Seed a Code Week program.
This was a group of 8–10 kids from 5–15 yrs of age who came and we had a boot camp of sorts.
This was mostly to get them to come and spent a week with my family here, and a time away from parents.
We did this a lot when I was a child but these days as parents hardly let kids out of their sight.
In the time of Quarantine, this seems not do-able anymore.

Though I would love to have your kids over and do a summer camp of sort once these restrictions lift.
Im sharing what I taught during the Week of Code.

1. Get Them to Complete Code Karts
https://montessori.edokiacademy.com/en/our-games/discovery/car-game
- This is a fun way to get even young kids to play a game and learn the basics of coding including instructions, sequence, loops.
- Unlocking this is a paid feature for all programs (around 100 puzzles) but its been worth every rupee
- Need an iPad or an Android Device for this

2. Code.org Basics
After they complete Code Karts they are ready for Code.org and the side by side coding offered in there
Use a Computer to do this

If your kids are between 4–8 they can take this course
https://studio.code.org/s/pre-express-2019

If between 9–18 they should take this course
https://studio.code.org/s/express-2019

3. How Computers Work / How the Internet Works Videos
Once they have completed the basics of all of this, share with them the Khan Academy and Code.ORG collaboration videos on how computers work and how the internet works
https://code.org/educate/resources/videos

4. Advanced Programming for Apps, Games and Web

Turtle Programming In App Lab
This unit introduces the foundational concepts of computer programming, which unlocks the ability to make rich, interactive apps. This course uses JavaScript as the programming language, and App Lab as the programming environment to build apps, but the concepts learned in these lessons span all programming languages and tools.

For older Kids (13+) they could try
GameLab here https://code.org/educate/gamelab
WebLab here https://code.org/educate/weblab

5. Learn JavaScript
Can also learn JavaScript after that using this app

6. Projects and Fun

Robots
My kids have also programmed a Robot here

Dance Party

MineCraft

7. Mac.iPad Owners — Swift PlayGrounds
Apple also has a great set of Coding for iOS — SWIFT

If you kids are stuck or need to do a video tutorial , please let me know topics of interest, I will teach over zoom or record videos to help.

Thanks and I hope all of you will have a great Summer with your kids.
